  Week 13 - Modernism in America Pt. 2  Mid-century modern architecture was characterized by flat roofs, angular details and asymmetrical profiles. Expansive walls of glass, clean lines and wide-open floor plans were also common. This era was also the first to use bi-level structures that married indoor spaces to the outside. This was also extremely popular on the West Coast. This period highlights famous architects and designers that led the way in the modernism movement, such as Joseph Eichler. There are also many furniture designers mentioned such as Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi. Manufacturers such as Florence Knoll and Herman Miller are recognized as well.  Color schemes were important during this time.   WEEK 12 BLOG: Modernism in America Pt. 1 Modernism started in Germany and France and quickly spread throughout the globe. The modernist movement was post-World War 2. Many of the founders of the Modernist Movement fled from the European countries to Britain or America due to the World Wars. While pre-war modernism was theoretical and idealistic, post war modernism was practical and applied.  Frank Lloyd Wright was popular in the 1920s and 1930s for His work did not fit the concept of modernism or international style at that time. Is well known for creating the Hollyhock House in 1921 in Los Angeles, CA. It is a monumental structure of poured concrete with cast geometric ornament and elaborate terraces and gardens.   WEEK 11 BLOG: Rise of the Interior Designer and Women in Interior Design Period of eclectic architecture a need arose for design professionals who could furnish interiors according to a particular period style and the building they were housed in. There were interior designers as early as 1900s before the profession of interior design and architects would hire various craftsmen to complete elements of the interior design. The job of the interior decorator was to fully furnish an interior. This would include the obtaining of furniture, art, accessories, floor coverings, and any other aspect of creating a cohesive interior design plan. There was a growing need of a wealthy class of people for houses that reflected status, including professions to help with outfitting the interiors.   Week 9 - Art Deco and Industrial Design  Art Deco began in the 1920’s when there was tension between the functionalists and decor ators. Functionalists valued function, simplicity, mass production, designing for the common person and social good. Decorators valued labor intensive craftsmanship, elite market, not concerned with social theory. The essence of Art Deco Design featured chevron shapes, zig- zags, folding screen - African tribal art, stepped profile of furniture suggest the architecture of skyscrapers, large mirrors, and prominent lighting fixtures call attention to modern materials. The furniture Design used rich materials such as ebony, zebrawood with inlays of ivory, tortoiseshell, leather, polished metals, mirrors, and glass.  There were many prominent architects, designers, and artists from this period.
