Week 4 BLOG: Art Nouveau Pt. 2
Week 4: Art Nouveau Pt. 2
This period was confined to the influential work and architectural styles of Tiffany and Sullivan.
Louis Comfort Tiffany was a designer of decorative arts. He was gifted in painting, jewelry making, pottery and glass. He reorganized his business in 1885 to concentrate on creating stained glass art. The business was commissioned to produce several American church windows. He was also known for using glass and metal materials and “Art Nouveau Lamp Construction”.
Louis H. Sullivan desired to create a new style of architecture that reflected contemporary America- used Art Nouveau style ornamentation. He is known as “the father of skyscrapers” , which used steel frames, and work that uses the concept “Form Follows Function”. He eventually moved to Chicago in 1875 and was known for his rich ornamentation in a very personalized style. His highly detailed and decorative style of architecture was inspired by nature, not historic precedent. These details were applied to commercial buildings. This created unity in tall buildings.
Some famous buildings of Louis H. Sullivan are the Charnley House of 1892, the Schlesinger S Mayer, The National Farmers Bank (1908), and the Transportation Building (1893).
Some current applications from his period are works of architecture that have been preserved over the years and transformed into modern applications.
Other current applications include modern works of lamp and decor with stained glass references or designs based on tiffany patterns and design styles.
One Step Further:
Antoni Gaudi was a Spanish Catalan architect who is known for using the Art Nouveau style. He was the “best known practitioner of Catalan Modernism”. Gaudí's works are in Barcelona and reflect an individualized and distinctive style. Gaudí's work was influenced by nature and religion. He detailed all of his creations with integrated architectural crafts such as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging, and carpentry. His most famous works are Casa Batlló, Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Parc Guell, and the Episcopal Palace, Astorga.

ReplyDeleteGrace,
ReplyDeleteThis Blog entry was excellent. You describe the strongest American designers who brought Art Nouveau to the United States. Your summary and images of Tiffany and Sullivan were strong. I enjoyed your opening image! The modern examples were great too! Although, I hate to see the Carson Pirie Scott building as a Target Store. Focusing on Antoni Gaudi was an excellent choice for "One Step Further" Well done! 50/50 points
